Boy, nine, begs Boris Johnson to help his severely epileptic brother get medical cannabis on the NHS

A nine-year-old boy has asked Prime Minister Boris Johnson to have his brother prescribed medical cannabis to treat his epilepsy.

Thomas Braun, of Farndon, Cheshire, delivered a letter today at 10 Downing Street asking the Prime Minister to help his brother Eddie get an NHS prescription for the drug.

Medical cannabis was legalized in November 2018, but only three prescriptions have been issued for it since then, according to campaign group End Our Pain.

The drug can only be prescribed by the NHS in exceptional cases.

The families of those denied a prescription have had to pay for the drug privately, which can cost up to £ 2,000 a month.

Epidyolex is the only cannabis-based drug approved in the UK for the treatment of epilepsy and can also be prescribed for chemotherapy and multiple sclerosis.

The medicine contains cannabidiol (CBD), which is different from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the chemical that makes people high when smoking weed.

Medical cannabis refers to any medicine made from the cannabis plant and has been legal in the UK since 2018.

Epidyolex is the only cannabis-based drug approved in the UK for the treatment of epilepsy. It contains a chemical found in the plant – cannabidiol (CBD).

However, Epidyolex can only be prescribed to patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, according to the NHS.

Both diseases are extremely rare forms of epilepsy, occurring in about one in 15,000 (Dravet) and one in 50,000 (Lennox-Gastaut) children.

This suggests that the two combined make up only about 6,000 people in the UK, including adults who may be less likely to get it than children.

The medicine will only be considered when other treatments have not been appropriate or ineffective, further narrowing the number of people who may be eligible.

The NHS warns that very few people in England are likely to receive a prescription for medicinal cannabis.

The drug can only be considered if other treatments were unsuitable or ineffective.

Charity Epilepsy Action warned that the 2018 law change was “extremely restrictive” despite the legalization of medical cannabis.

Children and adults with other complex and treatment-resistant epilepsy syndromes could also benefit from the drug, it said.

The Medicines Agency, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), recommends using CBD only under certain conditions to treat seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndromes, both rare forms of epilepsy.

The patient should be evaluated every six months, and if the frequency of their seizures has not decreased by at least 30 percent, treatment should be discontinued, according to NICE.

The Braun family is calling on the government to step in and speak to them about the problems with access to medical cannabis in the NHS.

The issue has been a controversial issue since the drug was approved, and families are frustrated that it is basically available but extremely difficult to come by.

In his letter, Eddie’s brother Thomas said that his brother meant “everything” to him and that he had severe, complex epilepsy and could have up to 100 seizures a day and needed a lot of extra care.

His parents shouldn’t have the “added worry of having to find a lot of money to pay for his medication,” which can cost up to £ 780 a month.

Describing the day, Thomas said, “I was nervous, it was intimidating. But it was also very exciting because this is my chance to actually change the life of my brother and my family.

“If the government paid for it, we wouldn’t have to worry about fundraisers and other things, and that will give us more family time.”

Thomas and Eddie’s mother, Ilmarie Braun, said her family and friends had fundraisers to help raise money so they could buy Eddie’s medication, but other families had to stop buying them or selling their homes to help them to be able to afford.

She said, “Being a parent is wonderful and it can also be a challenge. Then in your own world it is difficult to be a parent to a child who has complex needs because you have to struggle for access to everything.

“A school place, adjustments at home to make it accessible, the right wheelchair to try and meet Eddie’s medication needs, that’s just unreasonable.”

“We want Boris Johnson to act now. He can unlock the emergency funding to cover this while taking all the necessary steps to get the studies commissioned, all these things that they have been talking about for three years and that need to happen. ‘

Hannah Deacon, whose son Alfie Dingley has an NHS prescription for medical cannabis to treat his epilepsy, wrote a letter to Boris Johnson last week about the drug’s transformative effects on her son.

A campaign by the Deacon family and others marked the turning point for the government to legalize medical cannabis.

Ms. Deacon from Warwickshire, who came to Downing Street to support Eddie’s family, said: “Alfie got his NHS prescription on June 19, 2018 and it was like night and day.

“His life went from very severe seizures to a year with no seizures in May, and the quality of life and our family improved with this drug.”

The Braun family and Ms. Deacon are calling on the government to step in and speak to them about the problems of access to medical cannabis in the NHS.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Welfare said: “We recognize the great challenges facing children living with rare and difficult-to-treat diseases.

“The government changed the law to allow medical professionals to prescribe unapproved cannabis-based products for medical purposes when it is clinically appropriate and in the best interests of patients.

“Licensed cannabis-based drugs are funded by the NHS when there is clear evidence of their safety and clinical effectiveness.”

Others have also urged the government to respond to the difficulties faced by those trying to gain access to the drug.

In September 2019, 10 families – including the Brauns – marched in 10th place to demand that their epileptic children be given medical cannabis through the NHS after none of them received a prescription despite the drug being legalized.

On Monday, medical cannabis activists Billy and Charlotte Caldwell sent a letter to Secretary of Health Matt Hancock and the DHSC asking them to support the NHS ‘first clinical study of medical cannabis and fund the National Institute for Health Research.

The Care Quality Commission, which regulates and inspects health and social services in England, approved the first medical cannabis clinic in England in October 2019.

It enabled the London-based private practice Sapphire Medical Clinic to prescribe cannabis-based drugs.

How is medical cannabis used?

A broad term for any type of cannabis-based medicine used to relieve symptoms.

Some products that claim to be medical cannabis, such as CBD oil or hemp oil, are legally available as dietary supplements in health food stores.

However, there is no guarantee that these will be of good quality or have any health benefits.

And some cannabis-based products require a prescription as medical cannabis. These will likely only benefit a very small number of patients.

Epidyolex for children and adults with epilepsy

Epidyolex is a high purity liquid that contains CBD (cannabidiol).

CBD is a chemical substance found in cannabis with medicinal benefits.

It won’t get you high because it doesn’t contain THC, the psychoactive chemical in cannabis.

Nabilone for chemotherapy patients

Many people who receive chemotherapy have periods when they feel sick or vomit.

Nabilone can be prescribed by a specialist to relieve these symptoms, but only if other treatments have not helped or are not suitable.

Nabilone is a medicine taken as a capsule that is designed to work in a similar way to THC.

The drug has been approved in the UK so has passed rigorous quality and safety tests and has proven medicinal benefits.

Nabiximol (Sativex) for MS

Nabiximols (Sativex) is a cannabis-based medicine that is sprayed into the mouth

It’s approved in the UK for people with MS-related muscle spasm that hasn’t gotten better with other treatments.

However, availability at the NHS is limited. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) does not recommend NHS doctors prescribing Sativex because it is not cost-effective.

There is some evidence that medicinal cannabis can help with certain types of pain, although that evidence is not yet strong enough to recommend it for pain relief.

At 16.27% CAGR, Industrial Hemp Market Accounted for USD 3.91 Bn in 2020 says Brandessence Market Research

PUNE, India, December 3, 2021 / PRNewswire / – According to Brandessence Market Research, forecasts for the hemp industry are on promising path to grow at a promising 16.27% CAGR over the 2021-2027 period. The market forecast for industrial hemp estimates that industrial hemp for $ 3.91 billion in 2020. The growing demand for hemp food products, nutraceuticals, beverages, alternative sources of protein and others remain major drivers in regions like North America.

Legalization of marijuana in 18 states in The United States has increased the promise of an already robust growth in the hemp market. At its peak, industrial hemp has come in $ 45-50 per pound in 2018. The Covid-19 crisis has had a negative impact on industrial hemp and slowed demand. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that farmers can produce up to 2 to 12 tons of dry logs per acre. Similar estimates are projected in Europewhere farmers produce 3.6 to 8.7 tons per acre. The USDA also estimated that the variable, fixed, and operator costs were based on $ 286 per hectare for hemp fiber, $ 233 for certified seeds and $ 196 for seeds. While those estimates are ancient, the promising new growth from legalizing marijuana in 18 states is a promising new growth engine for the industrial hemp market. The 2018 US Farm Bill, which removed hemp from a controlled substance list, also promises a new opportunity for growers around the world to join the industrial hemp market.

Industrial hemp market: an overview

While marijuana-based products have fueled some frenzy for hemp production, these estimates also remain misleading. On the one hand, due to the economic downturn, marijuana sales have not grown as high as initially thought. In addition, conventional uses of industrial hemp, including textiles, paper, rope, clothing, plastics, paints, biofuels, insulation, food, and animal feed. Industrial hemp is also increasingly used in building materials, personal care cosmetics, etc. It is also believed that the traditional uses of hemp in medicine were widespread Asia Pacific, and other regions. In addition, the ban on hemp items led to the destruction of ancient knowledge regarding the use of hemp products. Despite the tremendous damage to its reputation, hemp seeds are widely recognized as a good source of protein, fat, and high nutritional fiber. Similarly, traditional oriental medicine has used hemp for the treatment and prevention of diseases for thousands of years. The growing interest in hemp in major food categories such as nutraceuticals is expected to fuel the growth of the hemp market over the 2021-2028 period. The growing demand for hemp products to treat depression remains a major driver along with several other key benefits of industrial medical hemp.

The USDA also announced crop insurance and incentives such as farm loans for the growth of the hemp market. In the midst of a historic economic downturn, this led to a significant oversupply. However, the USDA and industry experts believe the outlook for the hemp market remains optimistic. For example, the USDA found that hemp production remained at zero in most parts of the US in 2014, while it rose to nearly 90,000 acres in 2018. Likewise, the licensed hemp growers were no more than 300 in 2014, which rose to over 3,500 by 2018.

Access to medicinal cannabis an issue for both patients and suppliers

OPINION: I was lucky enough to spend a few days in the South Island last week, translating an old car from Timaru to Wellington.

Not only did I get to enjoy some of the South Island’s god-given macadams in a 40-year-old GT car, but I also gave myself the chance to stop by some old friends. One of them was Dion, an old family friend who lives in a senior village outside Christchurch.

Dion led an active life and spent 50 years farming in Canterbury and the highlands. He’s a good rider and an even better fisherman, which he did for the next 20 years.

From the rakaia salmon to the monster trout at Benmore and Whitebait Runs in Haast, he survived two wives and had to move to a senior citizen village a few years ago at the age of 88 and suffered from back pain and arthritis physical life as a result of his life.

With the help of donations, Karen and Adam Jeffries buy medicinal cannabis products to help their daughter Zoe control her seizures. They were shocked by some of the prices charged. (Video first released on December 4, 2020)

* Cannabis use without a prescription is still a crime despite an extenuating stance, experts warn
* Medical cannabis company Taranaki debuts on NZX
* AUT announces research into next generation medical cannabis
* Department reviews regulations as companies fear bankruptcy amid slow-moving medical cannabis program

But what was really difficult for him was the loss of his independence. He made a poor invalid. This resulted in him suffering from panic attacks and high blood pressure. With the help of a few professionals, he tried a variety of antipsychotics to catch up with him. But the side effects were harsh and they didn’t seem to work.

He suffered a panic attack earlier this year when a couple of younger friends visited him. One of them took cannabidoil (CBD) to help her sleep and offered Dion a dropper of the olive oil-like compound.

Doctors are still very careful about prescribing CBD oil.

Doctors are still very careful about prescribing CBD oil.

Although Dion had always enjoyed Speights and a bottle or two of Highland Park, he had never tried cannabis (in any form) in his life. But he thought “what the hell” and stuck the pipette full under his tongue.

Within minutes he began to calm down and control his breathing. He guesses that it was like the scary fog cleared and the sunlight came through.

Dion then went to get some CBD oil. The nursing home was prudent and uniformed. So he went to his doctor. She was also careful as she had never prescribed anything before.

She was in good company. According to the New Zealand Medical Journal, 79 percent of New Zealand family doctors have concerns about prescribing medical cannabis. And it’s not surprising.

Medicinal cannabis plants grown in a high security facility.

Doctors have little solid research on the benefits of CBD oil (or tinctures or creams) and have a legal and ethical obligation not to cause harm.

Dion then spoke to the local chemist. He was surprised to find the chemist was happy to supply it after finding an approved supplier shortly after the medical cannabis program went into effect last April.

An old hippie neighbor at the nursing home told Dion she could pair him up with the local “green fairy”, but that sounded questionable. And Dion is not a seedy man.

In the end, he found a doctor in Wellington who was among the 21 percent of doctors who were happy to provide medicinal cannabis to patients, and he specifically thought that CBD oil could help Dion and not negatively affect the other drugs that he took, would react.

Mike O'Donnell:

Kevin stent / stuff

Mike O’Donnell: “According to the New Zealand Medical Journal, 79 percent of New Zealand general practitioners have concerns about prescribing medical cannabis.”

A Zoom consultation then resulted in the CBD doctor writing to Dion’s doctor and the nursing home endorsing an initial 25 milliliter bottle. And finally Dion got his dope bottle.

The good news is that it assumes it will work and with no side effects. The bad news is that this process took most of three months to complete.

This is bad for the patients and bad for a young local industry in which around 40 companies are trying to gain a foothold.

If you or someone you know thinks that CBD oil could help with pain management, mental health, or insomnia, what’s the best approach? From what I’ve been able to find out, there are four basic steps.

Do your research first. Find solid evidence that CBD (in a specific format) combats the symptoms or the cause of the disease. Also speak to local pharmacies to confirm they have access to the products.

Local medical cannabis company Ora Pharm offers an online portal that is helpful for making evidence-based decisions about the use of medical cannabis. There’s also a pretty handy app out there for incorporating CBD oil into your overall health care routine.

Second, email your GP with the results of your research and your desire to test the drug. Note that for a year now, medical cannabis in the form of CBD has been able to be prescribed for medical conditions. Make it clear that you are not looking for products that contain THC.

The cultivation of dope follows New Zealand-based medical cannabis company Rua Bioscience.

Third, make an appointment with this family doctor to clarify your case. Probably a double appointment so that the discussion is not rushed. Everything is going well, they will agree to a little test so see how it goes.

If your general practitioner is not convinced that it is in your best interests, find another general practitioner. Right now I can’t find a website that will do this for you. So you have to do a little research online or chat with the Medical Cannabis Council.

He’s no fool, but dear old Dion thinks this stuff works. And he’s not the only one.

Now the only thing left is for the system to normalize to ensure that patients receive the benefits and that the young local industry can go on and thrive.

– Mike “MOD” O’Donnell is a professional director, writer, and host. His twitter handle is @modsta and he prefers Highland Park Hooter.
