3 Science-Backed Benefits of CBD Oil and How to Use It Safely

Published

  • CBD oil health benefits include pain relief, epilepsy treatment, and possibly anxiety relief.
  • You shouldn’t take CBD oil if you are pregnant or on certain medications like antidepressants or antipsychotics.
  • Be sure to check your state’s CBD laws as it is illegal in some states or you may need a medical card.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a type of chemical found in the same plant that produces marijuana.

However, CBD is different from marijuana and will not get you high. That’s because it doesn’t contain the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, THC, which is responsible for the intoxicating sensations associated with using marijuana.

Recently, CBD has gained prominence in the scientific community as it can treat multiple conditions – from chronic pain to epilepsy. Here are some of the benefits of CBD oil and whether science says it might be helpful to you.

1. CBD oil relieves pain

CBD has been widely studied as a natural, non-addictive agent for the treatment and management of pain symptoms – particularly as an alternative to opioids for those with severe pain.

While animal studies have found CBD to be a promising treatment for nerve-based (neuropathic) pain and inflammatory pain, few studies have looked at its effects in humans.

However, researchers know that CBD has anti-nociceptive and anti-hyperalgesic effects – meaning it can block the detection of pain by neurons and counteract pain sensitivity.

“CBD has over 65 different targets in the brain and body that work on many receptors and other areas to alter the messages that cells send to each other. When the pain message is sent from one cell to another, CBD can block or diminish that message, “says Bonni Goldstein, MD, the medical director of Canna-Centers, a California-based medical practice that treats patients with cannabis use in severe cases or chronic diseases.

Goldstein says that higher ratios of CBD to THC are often more effective for inflammatory pain like rheumatoid arthritis, while lower ratios are more effective for nerve pain like shingles.

A 2006 study found that combining THC and CBD increased the effectiveness of each cannabinoid in pain relief and decreased the side effects of using THC alone.

“Studies clearly show that all types of pain respond better to products that contain both compounds rather than each one,” says Goldstein.

2. CBD oil can treat epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which abnormal brain activity causes seizures. Recent studies show that CBD can be an effective treatment for epilepsy, although scientists aren’t sure about the exact mechanisms behind it, says Goldstein.

A 2017 study of patients ages two to 46 years old with treatment-resistant epilepsy found that 86% of patients experienced a reduction in seizures after consuming various formulations of craft CBD that contains CBD that contains low levels of THC . Of the participants, 10% said they became seizure-free.

Another small study from 2018 found that children who took a daily dose of 20 mg / kg of CBD oil saw a significant decrease in seizure frequency compared to a placebo. However, the study found that seizure intensity increased in patients taking CBD.

3. CBD oil can reduce anxiety

Early research found that CBD could relieve symptoms of a number of anxiety disorders, including:

connected

6 natural ways to calm anxiety

A small 2011 study of patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) found that 600 mg of CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment, and discomfort when exposed to stressful situations such as public speaking.

Goldstein says that CBD affects the brain in a number of ways, including improving the brain’s anxiety-reducing chemicals and targeting serotonin receptors involved in mood.

“There is preliminary research that points to neuroinflammation as a cause of anxiety. CBD is a proven powerful anti-inflammatory that can add to its anxiety-reducing effects, “says Goldstein.

Risks of CBD oil

However, much research on CBD oil is still preliminary and there are various health risks to consider before using it.

It’s unregulated. Unless you buy CBD with a medical card from a state-licensed store known as a pharmacy or a state where marijuana is legalized, you are forced to move into an unregulated market that may involve ” fake “or low quality CBD. Make sure you check your state’s laws and look for companies that participate in third-party testing before buying CBD, Goldstein says.

It can interact with drugs. CBD is broken down in the liver, where many other drugs are metabolized. Medications that CBD can interact with include:

  • Seizure medication such as brivaracetam or carbamazepine
  • Chemotherapy drugs such as everolimus
  • Muscle relaxants such as chlorzoxazone
  • Respiratory drugs such as theophylline
  • Medicines for high blood pressure such as verapamil or propranolol
  • Antidepressants such as amitriptyline
  • Antipsychotics such as haloperidol or clozapine

“Anyone with serious medical conditions who take medication should avoid using CBD without medical supervision,” says Goldstein. “Patients taking certain drugs, such as blood thinners or other drugs for serious illnesses, should always have medical supervision.”

It can be unsafe if you are pregnant. While there is a lack of research studying the effects of CBD on pregnant women and their children, the FDA recommends that pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid CBD oil.

Animal studies have shown that maternal or paternal exposure to CBD and THC can hinder proper fetal development, and unregulated CBD products could be contaminated with substances that could harm the fetus or breastfed babies.

It can have side effects. CBD is often well tolerated, but side effects can occur at higher doses. These side effects include:

  • diarrhea
  • Sedation
  • Worsening of seizures in epilepsy patients
  • Decreased appetite

How to Use CBD Oil Safely

In 2018, the US Congress passed a bill regulating the production of hemp or cannabis with extremely low THC content and allowing it to be grown and processed into products. But not all states have adjusted their laws, so CBD is still illegal in some states like Idaho, Nebraska, and Iowa.

In states where CBD is legal, you must be either 18 or 21 years old to buy it – and make sure you check local laws before traveling across state lines with it.

Vaping can help you quit smoking – but that doesn’t make it a safer alternative

While there are several ways to consume CBD, most of the time, oral intake seems to be the preferred method. That’s because vaping and smoking can damage the lungs. Also, when applied topically, it can be difficult to measure the dosage.

Popular consumption methods are:

  • Oral consumption (oils, tinctures, pills, edibles)
  • Smoking or vaping
  • Topical application (creams, lotions, transdermal patches)
  • Intranasal ingestion (sprays)

CBD has a very broad therapeutic spectrum, with dosages ranging from 10 mg per day up to 800 mg per day. “The only way to find your dose is to start with a low dose and gradually increase it to find the dose that works the best,” says Goldstein.

Insider tips

Although more human studies need to be done, CBD appears to be a promising therapeutic agent for a number of conditions including anxiety, epilepsy, and chronic pain. If you want to try it out, find out about your state’s laws and consult a doctor to make sure you are consuming it safely and legally.

Exploring the changing landscape of cannabis extracts

Published

on

Always Pure Organics Lead Researcher Andrew Megahy

European manufacturer of industry leading CBD, Always Pure Organics (APO), take us on a fascinating journey through the ever-evolving world of cannabis extracts.

The CBD industry has come out of its infancy and is starting to refine its taste buds in terms of the products they want. Initially, consumers and market participants tested the water and learned about CBD, what it might contain, what products were popular, and how best to introduce new products containing CBD. Now that it has been a few years since CBD’s first surge in popularity, consumers and businesses alike are trying to get out of their comfort zone and adopt new and exciting ways of incorporating CBD into their products and lifestyle. This means moving away from CBD isolate, the highly pure single active ingredient, and choosing a new form of raw material.

One such option is to use broad spectrum cannabis extracts, often referred to as distillates in the industry. The background and terminology of distillates can be a bit confusing as, despite significant differences, the market has spawned several different types of products with this name, reinforced by the traditional notion of a “distilled product”.

What is a distillate?

A distillate is literally a product that has been produced by distillation. Distillation is an ancient practice, with the earliest recorded operations dating from around 1200 BC. Took place in Babylon as part of perfumery. Basically, distillation consists of separating components from a liquid solution by boiling and condensing. This allows you to isolate certain compounds for use in their pure form or remove them from solution while leaving the rest untouched. There are many modern forms of distillation, as should a longstanding and improved process, each tailored for specific purposes. Notable examples of distillation are the production of alcoholic beverages with a higher ethanol content than pure fermentation or the desalination of salt water to make it drinkable.

The formulation chemist from Always Pure Organics formulates distillate in the in-house laboratory in Manchester.

How about some distillates specifically related to cannabis products? There are two techniques that are popular in making cannabis distillates: short path distillation and steam distillation. Short path distillation only transfers materials over a very short distance (typically just a few centimeters) and at a lower pressure than other techniques. This results in minimal waste and precise temperature control. In steam distillation, however, heated steam is bubbled directly through the raw material mixture to add heat rather than heating the container in which it is contained.

What these techniques have in common is that they both use finer heat control than traditional distillation, making them perfect for making cannabis derivatives, which typically contain volatile compounds and substances. By using these heat sensitive methods, it is possible to more easily preserve the terpenes, cannabinoids, and flavonoids that might otherwise decompose or evaporate.

Cannabis distillate is effectively a more refined version of the raw extract made by dissolving biomass in a solvent. Usually the extract goes through winterization to remove the plant matter and waxes, but a distillate can realistically exist on a spectrum from this stage until it consists of only a few compounds. The CBD industry has always had problems naming these products, using terminologies such as narrow spectrum, broad spectrum, and full spectrum – sometimes interchangeably. What they all have in common is that they contain a number of cannabinoids (often depending on legality) and a few other compounds, typically terpenes and flavonoids. Buying these CBD distillate cannabis extracts always came with some risk when compared to buying an isolate, as it could be difficult to ensure you were getting the same product consistently.

Why choose a distillate over an isolate?

It is undeniable that CBD isolate has several advantages over a distillate, regardless of the form or the cannabinoid content that distillate takes. Isolate is a highly pure single compound that generally approximates pharmaceutical grade grades and can consistently achieve this purity if the manufacturer knows what he is doing. It is theoretically easier for manufacturers to work with an isolate because of its minimal flavor and crystalline powder form. In fact, it’s no surprise that the first CBD drug (Epidiolex) was made with CBD isolate for all of the reasons above.

However, CBD isolate lacks a major benefit that distillate can bring – the so-called entourage effect. Effectively a cannabis-specific version of the phrase “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” refers to the idea that ingesting multiple compounds from the plant in a single formulation can produce more significant effects than a single compound in isolation. Medical cannabis patients will be able to tell you that different strains produce different results, presumably due to the variety of cannabinoids and terpenes present. Distillate products are likely to have the same ability precisely because they contain all of these compounds.

Distillates also offer more attractive options to end users. CBD isolate is a white, crystalline powder that can be daunting or confusing to consumers, but other cannabis extracts can come in many forms depending on their exact composition. Different options include a flaky powder, solid pieces of amber like honeycombs, or even solutions that remain mostly liquid at room temperature. As previously stated, these distilled cannabis extracts often contain terpenes and flavonoids (the compounds responsible for the distinct smell and taste of cannabis products), which means they are more attractive to the consumer’s nose and mouth. It is even possible to source full and broad spectrum cannabis extracts with tailored terpene content to match famous cannabis strains like Super Lemon Haze or Grandaddy Purple or to create flavor profiles similar to fruits, candies or cocktails.

Always pure organic products approach

Always Pure Organics has always prided itself on being at the forefront of the CBD market, whether in terms of compliance with regulations and laws (like Novel Foods) or by offering our customers unique and creative products (we were one of the the first white label manufacturers to offer terpene-flavored oils, for example). We have seen the industry change as both market participants and end users look to new and exciting CBD products, with the predictable decline in interest in isolate products.

To this end, we decided to develop a range of standardized, broad-spectrum, distilled cannabis extracts. These products contain set percentages of different cannabinoids and terpenes so our customers can choose a combination that suits their purposes and preferences for each concern. These products have been designed to be ideal for both industrial purposes (e.g. finished products) and direct customer use. Whatever purpose a user has in mind for a non-insulating product, Always Pure Organics is confident that we can deliver something for its purpose. In the exceptional case that one of our standardized broadband products does not meet customer expectations, we are also open to custom-made products under certain conditions.

Besides the advantages mentioned above, our main purpose in introducing these products is to ensure that the standard of the C.annabis market remains high. The regulations on non-food CBD products are still a bit behind the innovation and creativity of market participants, so it is up to the pioneers to ensure that only high-quality and safe products can be purchased. We pride ourselves on our commitment to quality and safety and actively participate in projects and standards to prove it, such as from customers and consumers of our products about how much CBD has changed their lives for the better and has a great impact on it, that we do our best to keep helping.

One example is our involvement in Green Zone Japan’s Green Circle Initiative, a medical advisory group that provides healthcare professionals with evidence-based information on the use of cannabis-based drugs. Always Pure Organics has made our broad spectrum cannabis extracts available to Green Zone Japan for use in their studies on the treatment of epileptic seizures in children, a project that has had incredible success since its inception. Proof of the effectiveness and safety of CBD products – and C.annabis products as an extension – and how they benefit people, is in the foreground of our objectives, which we have pursued since the company was founded. Always Pure Organics believes that one of the best ways to support this attitude is to only offer high quality, safe products and try to bring the rest of the market up to this standard as well.

The future of CBD products?

The CBD market has seen its share of less than reputable players in the market, as evidenced by the multitude of articles and publications in recent years that have drawn attention to the presence of THC, heavy metals and other impurities in CBD products that are free in high Quantities sold are street locations. In addition, the prevalence of products that contain significantly less than the marketed CBD content – sometimes none at all. These reports – and the manufacturers responsible for the products in question – only harm an industry with so much potential to help people. The first time someone tries a CBD product and accidentally purchases one of these subpar products, they could potentially be missing out on something or inadvertently ingesting something actively harmful.

For precisely the reasons mentioned above, we decided to bring this range of standardized broad spectrum cannabis extracts to market. Always Pure Organics believes in our reputation for quality and our commitment to improving the CBD market. We hope so much that these cannabis extracts will inspire other manufacturers to try new products and formulations that they might not otherwise have trusted. By offering a range of well-known products that are consistent across all batches and backed by APO’s reputation, we hope to continue the recent trends in quality and safety that are building confidence in the market. This is especially important in a market like CBD, which lacks the same regulations as more established products like tobacco or cosmetic products. Because the CBD industry is still so reliant on trust, we believe suppliers need to play such an active role.

Different Ways to Take CBD Oil

Published

on

Photo of CRYSTALWEED cannabis on Unsplash

Nowadays, many people want a healthier lifestyle with natural products. It can be difficult to find alternatives to products that you can buy at the drugstore, but luckily we have discovered many benefits of harnessing the natural properties of the cannabis plant. One compound that has gained a lot in traction is cannabidiol (CBD). Unlike the THC found in marijuana, CBD has no psychoactive properties. This way, you can reap the health benefits without feeling “high”.

Many people have used CBD to help regulate their sleep patterns, and its use enables your body to get the rest it needs without affecting your mental state. Here are some ways you can consume CBD to help your health.

You can smoke or vape CBD

Smoking cannabis has always been the most popular way to consume it, but we know that smoking too long is not good for your lungs. An alternative to this method is CBD vape oil. Smoking through a vape allows you to smoke CBD in a more discreet way as it does not have the typical scent associated with cannabis. Coupled with the quick dissolution and great flavors, the effects are largely the same.

Food or drink

One of the easiest and healthiest ways to take CBD is through ingesting food or drink. Since it is easy to get CBD oil, many people have experimented with the properties and flavors to come up with different CBD recipes. There are also different beverages that have been infused with different types and flavors, be it water, tea or soda. Everyone’s potency can vary, so it’s always good to start slowly.

These products allow you to get the effects of CBD quickly without enduring an unusual taste. Everyone reacts differently to the use of CBD, so taking it is not a universal approach. It’s best to start in small amounts and work your way up to see how you feel.

Take CBD topically or sublingually

If you are taking CBD for medicinal purposes, it is possible to add it to your daily medication or vitamin routine, such as the capsules offered by Hemmfy CBD products. Some people just put a few drops under their tongue with an eyedropper before bed, which is an easy way to get them into your system. There are many topical options for people with skin problems or inflammation. If you have neck pain, you can try rubbing oil, cream, or rolls fortified with CBD onto your skin. Some of these options are also fortified with other natural elements such as eucalyptus or peppermint.

Over time, we’ve discovered the benefits and uses of CBD oil and this industry is not going anywhere any time soon. There are products for everyone, including pets, that can help relieve anxiety and other physical symptoms. There are many options as the industry continues to innovate, so do your research to determine which product is best for you.
