Men Over 40 Can Do Lateral Bear Crawls to Change Directions

Trainer, author, and fitness model Kirk Charles, NASM-CPT CES, knows that life can get more complicated as you age. But that shouldn’t stop you from being up to date. He’ll help you answer the tough exercise questions that come with age so that you too can get fit over 40.

In my boot camp class, standard bear crawls were a challenging bodyweight exercise for my best clients. Whenever I wanted to introduce a new element into training, I added another variation, the side bear crawl. The standard version of the movement is in the sagittal plane (forward and backward movement), while the side bear crawl takes place in the frontal plane (side-to-side movement). Everyone works their core, glutes, hips, shoulders, and triceps, but the side bear crawl requires more coordination and balance. We don’t move as much in the frontal plane as we do in the sagittal plane in most typical daily activities, so doing this variation correctly could be more of a challenge.

To prepare for the movement, get on your hands and knees. Put your hands just below your shoulders with your elbows slightly bent. Your knees should be just below your hips. Your back should be in a neutral position (no curve or excessive curvature) as you compress your abs and glutes. Lastly, lift your knees off the floor so your shins and back are parallel to the floor. This is your starting position, which is the bear plank. Practice holding this position for 20 to 30 seconds before moving on to the side bear crawl.

To crawl sideways, extend your left hand to the left and your right foot to the left at the same time, then place them on the floor in their new position. Next, alternate movement by extending your right hand and left foot to the left and placing them on the floor. Keep your movements controlled to keep your balance, especially when you’re just starting out.

There are a few points to consider when crawling with the bear to the side. First, the exercise is more difficult when you have foot problems. As you alternate hand and foot movements, all of your weight shifts back and forth on each hand, putting additional pressure on your wrists. For some older men, holding a plank is easy when your body weight is evenly distributed between both wrists, but the bear crawling motion can be too much. After all, some older men don’t have the quad strength to stay in this position for too long. They tire quickly and their butts begin to rise up towards the sky as they crawl. That means it’s time to take a break because you’re losing shape and increasing the risk of injury.

The side bear crawl is an important type of exercise to add to your repertoire because movements in the frontal plane use different muscles. This exercise promotes hip abduction as well as horizontal abduction, which exercises and strengthens your shoulder and rotator cuff muscles differently.

If you have enough space, try the bear crawl sideways to start with five to ten steps to the right, then five to ten steps back to the left (that’s one sentence). Repeat three times, remembering to keep your core as tight as possible.

Pandemic pressures: Nova Scotia offers pioneering helpline exclusively for men

Nova Scotia has established what is believed to be Canada’s first 24-hour male-only hotline in response to an urgent need created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shortly after the provincial lockdown in March 2020, officials found more and more men calling the provincial 211 service, which provides information on state and municipal services.

“The service providers said, ‘Something’s happening here,” said Nancy MacDonald, executive director of the Family Service of Eastern Nova Scotia. It soon became clear that more men were actively seeking help as they grappled with job losses, broken relationships, loneliness, anger, and the added stress and anxiety caused by the pandemic.

“We’ve all heard the same thing: men are vulnerable, men are injured, men are socially isolated, men are dramatically affected by job losses and the shutdown of informal social networks,” says MacDonald.

The Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women and the province’s Community Services Department decided to take action, based in part on the idea that helping men in a potential crisis could reduce violence in the family. You turned to MacDonald because their non-profit organization offers advice and a wide range of programs – and has a lot of experience with 24-hour hotlines.

The new men’s helpline was founded in September 2020 with a little roar. Over the next 12 months, the free, confidential service handled 1,600 calls from men across the province – a large one

One of the goals of the program is to prevent domestic violence by providing men with easy access to risk management and intervention. MacDonald says the line was so successful that there was talk of expanding access to other provinces.

“The purpose is to create an open space where men feel heard and find their emotional balance,” says MacDonald.

“Men tend to view depression and anxiety as signs of weakness,” he said in an interview. “During the pandemic, isolation and feelings of stress and depression increased dramatically. We have received more recommendations than ever about our programs. “

“Men have smaller circles when it comes to their social networks, and their networks are often linked to the physical workplace,” says Sherry, a psychiatrist who studies the role of personality in relationship problems, depression, anxiety, and alcohol problems.

“Women have broader social circles and are usually better represented in cyberspace.”

While there is solid evidence that a national male hotline is needed, it would be a mistake to conclude that men have problems
more than women, adds Sherry.

“There is no evidence of human endurance. In the midst of this pandemic, everyone is suffering, and men and women sometimes suffer in different ways. “

Sherry says lockdowns have been especially difficult for women because they have been relieved of more nursing duties, which exacerbates pre-pandemic inequalities. Women are also still overrepresented in the heavily affected retail sector and in the healthcare sector.

However, it is clear that men seek help less often with mental or physical problems, which leads to more severe and complicated forms of the disease. Keith Anderson, a Nova Scotia attorney who has struggled with depression for years, says he sees the need for the new hotline.

“I’ve been there and I know the challenges to face,” said Anderson, a mental health attorney and senior peer support staff with the Canadian Mental Health Association in Cape Breton.

“When men get together and talk to each other, they’re not going to traverse the mental health continuum enough to need a therapist or psychologist, or to think about suicide.”

He sees a 24-hour service as the key to suicide prevention.

“At 3 a.m. you think about suicide,” says Anderson. “I was there. I had planned it. But I wouldn’t do that to my family.”

Men who are put on the helpline can spend up to 30 minutes speaking to a responder and there is no limit to the number of times
you can call. The service is offered in more than 200 languages ​​and there is the option of separate, short-term consultations,
for free.

An evaluation of the hotline released in July found that the largest group of callers needed help dealing with stress and anxiety related to losing their jobs or waiting for mental health services. Other callers spoke of feelings of loneliness and sadness, which they believe were heightened by the pandemic. And there have been calls from men seeking immediate help in dealing with relationship loss or anger, conflict, and violence.

About a third of the individual callers were referred to a short-term counseling service. However, a larger number of men repeatedly called for individual half-hour sessions on-demand.

“Sometimes callers felt that with each session they were ‘getting what they needed’ and that they appreciated the (helpline) as an accessible service to talk to a consultant about
immediately instead of being put on a waiting list for services, ”the study says.

CrossFit’s Double Under Jump Rope Skill Is Great for All Workouts

No matter what you think of CrossFit, there is no denying that it has had an impact on fitness culture today. CrossFit popularized training methods like AMRAP and EMOM, coined buzzwords like WOD and box, and introduced the world to epic fitness challenges like Murph. But one of the most significant impacts might be something you wouldn’t even think of: CrossFit helped transform jumping rope from a schoolyard pastime or an exercise machine only used by fighters to a global fitness trend.

The last point is no small matter. If you’ve ever jumped rope for more than 30 seconds, you’ve felt the muscle burn, stamina, and fat burning power – and there’s no shortage of studies to support the experience. In fact, research shows that jumping rope for just 10 minutes can burn as many calories as a 30-minute run. But there’s another reason the world is obsessed with jumping rope: If you’re good at it, you’ll look badass – especially if you’ve mastered CrossFit’s signature skipping rope skill, the Double Under.

As the name suggests, the Double Under (also known as “dub” or simply “DU”) involves swinging the rope under your feet twice per jump instead of once – and as this is either a faster swing or a higher jump (or both ) requires the skills is doubled the potential benefits.

There isn’t a lot of data on how many more calories you burn on dubs compared to subs (i.e. single unders). Since you have to use more force for dubs, it’s safe to say that your metabolism also has to shift into a higher gear. Equally important is that you develop the skills necessary to complete the difficult maneuver, including speed, explosiveness, endurance, and coordination.

Your movement: Make jumping rope a part of your weekly training schedule. Jump rope is great as a finisher, but don’t hesitate to make it the focus of your workout as well. Start with submarines, and as your skills improve, incorporate dubs and other skipping rope skills like the crisscross and jog step.

It’s better to use a speed rope, especially for the more difficult skills. These tools swap a traditional rope for either a thin vinyl cable or a wire rope. They also usually have ball bearings in their handles to make every swing even quieter and faster. Check out these ropes for your next jumping session.
