A Fitness App Moonlights as a Men’s Support Group

Like other singles his age, Mack Knight, 40, an executive at a Los Angeles software company, has a crew of pals who love to explore the city, travel and exercise together.

They take their workouts seriously: everyone wears a fitness tracker called a Whoop that monitors their body’s vital signs (including heart rate, breathing, and sleep) and shares that data through an app.

Last week, Mr. Knight was checking his whoop stats when he noticed that one of his buddies, a friend from business school, was missing out on his daily workout. “It was very unlike him,” he said. “He trains religiously.” The next time they were hanging out, he asked if his buddy was okay

The ability to share intimate stats with friends has made this fitness app a de facto virtual male support group. People use it to keep track of each other’s physical and mental health, and to help out when a buddy seems to be in trouble. (It turned out that Mr. Knight’s friend was fine – he was just engrossed in a cryptocurrency project.)

Whoop was developed in 2012 as a high-end monitoring device for professional athletes. Worn on the wrist or arm, it collects health data that can be shared with coaches and personal trainers to improve training.

“I was a college athlete,” says Will Ahmed, the app’s founder. “I thought it would be valuable to create something where we as a team can see each other’s data and see how we develop.”

The data is very personal, even intrusive. It shows whether your heart rate increases randomly or whether you burn only 300 instead of 1,000 calories in a day.

Whoop users can keep their information private, but since the device was released to the public a few years ago (users are paying $ 30 a month, including the band), there have been unexpected uses among friends. The app is for everyone but has found a use case that serves men in more ways than one.

“Whoop found an insidious way of helping men share things without hitting them on the head and saying that you have to share your feelings all the time,” said Dr. Jelena Kecmanovic, a Washington DC area clinical psychologist who writes often about how technology affects life.

The fact that data is shared “causes men to ask, ‘You didn’t sleep last night, what is it?'” Said Dr. Kecmanovic. “It’s a smart way to get people to check in, support one another, praise one another, and feel like part of a group.”

Peer pressure is a side effect. “We can all see each other’s numbers, so I want mine to be good,” said Joe Wernig, 30, a senior product manager at NBC Sports who lives in the East Village. He joined Whoop in January after a friend convinced him. He is now part of four groups of two to six people each. “There is a friendly competition,” he said.

For example, on Memorial Day weekend, Mr Wernig was partying with friends at an Airbnb rental in Cape May, NJ when he checked the app just before midnight. He saw that all of his friends had exercised more than he did that day, and although he was drunk and it was raining, he took a short walk on the beach.

“You can see how often your friends run or lift weights,” he said. “I can learn lessons from them that I apply to my own life.”

Friends also use the app to spy on each other. “My friends make fun of me all the time,” said Anthony Martinez, 30, Vice Media finance director who lives in the West Village. “If I dance and my heart rate goes up, will someone say, what were you doing last night at 2 a.m.?”

The app’s off-label use as a social support group became more pronounced in the darker sections of the pandemic.

“A lot of people don’t want to talk about the things that challenge us,” says Lee Chadowitz, 31, product manager in Hong Kong, who is on the team with his trainer and eight friends. “I can see if my buddy only sleeps three hours a night, and then I’ll probably have to check in. I don’t even have to say anything directly. I could just give a little nudge: ‘Hey, do you want a beer?’ “

According to Whoop, the app has around 85,000 teams (or groups of friends who created a sharing network in the app). “The majority of our teams are in the 10-person range,” said Ahmed, who refused to reveal the total number of users.

Blake Reichenbach, who runs Self-Himprovement, a wellness website for men, said Whoop appeals to men who are more comfortable when they gather around stereotypically masculine activities.

“There are many groups that get men to support other men, but the big problem is that men are not conditioned to meet other men and talk about their feelings,” Reichenbach said. He points to groups like Mr. Perfect, which were founded in Australia in 2016 and bring men together under the pretext of a barbecue.

“Men have fewer opportunities to form communities where they scrutinize one another and praise and support one another,” added Dr. Kecmanovic added. “We see a lot with male customers, especially after high school and college, who struggle with isolation. The pandemic only made it worse. “

Men Over 40 Try Spiderman Pushups for Hip Mobility and Strength

As older men, a solid way to keep exercising is to challenge yourself with a variety of exercises. My biggest challenge at 58 is my mobility. Over the years I’ve lost some mobility in most of my joints, especially my hips. This is mainly because I focused on building strength and improving athletic skills, but not including enough mobility training in my exercise program. Now I like to introduce mobility work with certain exercises, one of which is the Spiderman push-ups. The exercise helps loosen tight hips and expand your range of motion while sharpening your upper body and core strength at the same time.

To start, get into a plank position to do a traditional push-up. Your hands should be under your shoulders and your feet should be shoulder width apart. Squeeze your glutes, abs, and shoulder blades together to create full body tension. Start by lowering into a push-up. As you descend, lift your right foot and bring your knee toward your elbow, working to keep it in line with your hip. Then, as you push yourself back up, bring your right leg back to the starting position. Repeat the push-up, working the other side of your body, bringing your left knee to your elbow.

There are several challenges involved in doing a Spiderman push-up. Extending your knee to one side and keeping it in line with your body is difficult, especially if you are a little stiff. This requires an external rotation of your hips and tests your gluteal strength and range of motion.

It is also challenging to maintain a neutral spine as you descend into the push-ups. Your core needs to be firm so your hips don’t dip in, which you never want in a push-up. Plus, there’s an anti-rotation component that trains your core – once you lift one leg off the floor, gravity pulls the same side of your body towards the floor, testing your abs even further.

All of this is a lot to do in one exercise for anyone in need of mobility training. Some men may have problems with the push-up, especially with the added lower body movement, while others have difficulty turning the raised leg outward. If so, you can try doing the different components of the exercise separately, that is, doing the knee thrust from a high plank position and then adding a push-up repetition. Once you have achieved your full movement, try adding the Spiderman push-up to your workout for 3 sets of 6 to 8 repetitions.

Everyone crouches (or at least everyone should). Whether you’re a marathon runner trying to gain a competitive advantage, a bodybuilder preparing for the stage, or an everyday iron man looking to build strength and shred it, exercise can help you achieve your goals and deserve it a place in your weekly routine. In fact, nothing builds foreleg muscles better than loading a bar or grabbing some heavy dumbbells and walking on grass. But, as with any exercise, you need to regularly change the way you perform it to keep seeing results.

That’s where a lot of guys get in trouble. They get good at one squat variant – mostly the barbell squat or the front squat – and never deviate from it because they are good at it and think jumping into another variant is inconvenient and awkward. But the moment you think this is the moment you need to force yourself to try something different because you have just experienced one of the first signs of an impending plateau.

Enter the Zercher Squat. Invented in the 1930s by the strong man from St. Louis, Ed Zercher, this advanced front load exercise moves the bar from the tops of the shoulders to the crooks of the elbows. If this sounds slightly masochistic, you are not wrong (holding a heavily loaded Olympic pole in your arms isn’t exactly comfortable), but if you can handle it, the benefits are numerous.

Simone Biles' Gold Over America Tour features a strong lineup of world class gymnasts.  And before the group's tour stop in Minneapolis, MN, on October 13th, some of them did 10-minute conditioning (because top athletes obviously train before they perform!).  Olympic gold medalist Jade Carey and Olympic team silver medalist Grace McCallum streamed the training live on Instagram, led by gymnastics veteran Chellsie Memmel.  There were two rounds - one with five moves and one with four.  The exercises reminded me of the conditioning sessions I did earlier in training when I competed in gymnastics;  they would involve high-intensity circuits with a mixture of body weight strength and cardio movements.  In addition, my trainers have often included useful exercises that help us perfect our form at each event and thus translate it into better routines (think of: handstand exercises for bars).  For this workout specifically, expect to challenge your core, legs, and upper body with lots of plyometric movements.  It's not a workout for beginners, but you can change it up as needed.  10-Minute Gold Over America Tour Conditioning Exercise Equipment: An exercise mat is recommended.  Instructions: Make sure you warm up beforehand.  Do each exercise for 30 seconds.  You complete the first cycle and then rest for 30 seconds before finishing the second cycle.  After another rest period, you will run through each lap again, as shown below.  That's two rounds, twice in total.  As always, make sure you cool down with some stretches.  Round 1 3 heel lifts, 3 toe lifts: 30 seconds Alternating kinking lunges to squat: 30 seconds 2 jumping jacks, 2 burpees: 30 seconds 3 hollow rocks, 3 opening-closing: 30 seconds Rolling candles: 30 seconds pause for 30 seconds.  Lap 2 Alternating lunge: 30 seconds Pike Push-Up: 30 seconds Wide-narrow-wide knee bend jump: 30 seconds Skater: 30 seconds rest for 30 seconds.  Repeat this entire workout one more time with both circuits.  Review: Gold Over America Tour 10 Minute Fitness Workout Personally, I felt breathless after a single lap.  I liked the fact that the circles included a mix of different muscle targeting exercises so I didn't do any strict core or lower body movements for a few minutes.  The exercises that were the most challenging for me were the combination of double jumper and burpee and the combination of hollow rock and open-close.  The latter requires you to hold a hollow position for 30 seconds, and it's a belly quake waiting to happen!  My next goal will be to repeat the circles four times for a 20-minute workout, as opposed to twice for a 10-minute session.  Put on your best jersey - mine from GK Elite - and get started! The Zercher squat not only forces you to maintain a more upright trunk position – an important point of proper form in almost all squat variations – it also encourages you to fall deeper into the lower position (i.e., walking on grass) and increases engagement in the core, biceps and traps. It is also an advanced form of squat and an excellent way for experienced strength athletes to diversify their routines and challenge themselves with what many consider to be a brutally new way of performing a classic exercise.

Your movement: If you’re relatively new to strength training and haven’t mastered the front squat with the barbell, start there. But if you’ve been training for a while and have practiced both the back and front squats, don’t hesitate to try the Zercher.

As mentioned above, it will likely be uncomfortable at first, but your arms will adjust quickly, and the unique challenge for both your lower and upper body can help make new gains even in the most stale of routines. Start with a lower weight than you would normally use to master the pattern of movement, and then work your way up from there.
