8.5 Million Pounds of Frozen Chicken Recalled for Listeria Contamination

The Ministry of Agriculture has one statement say 8.5 million pounds of frozen cooked chicken will be recalled from Tyson Foods. The chicken is potentially contaminated with listeria and was voluntarily removed from the shelves by the meat company.

On June 9, 2021, two cases of listeriosis were reported to the Department of Agriculture and linked to Tyson Foods frozen chicken. After further investigation, the number of confirmed cases rose to three and included one death.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that causes listeriosis infection. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Listeria are foodborne germs and symptoms of infection include fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, stiff neck, loss of balance, fever, and even cramps. Symptoms of listeriosis usually appear after one to four weeks.

The department has rated this recall as “Class 1 – High” because listeriosis is severe. The recalled cooked chicken products include pizza, chicken strips, and pulled chicken breasts.
