You need to get your luck where you can, especially during a pandemic. So if you’re wondering why Sean MacDonald goes to so much trouble cooking and preparing the meals for his pup – who will devour them in less than a minute – he has an answer.

“It was a tough time and I thought it would be fun,” he says, “a puppy that eats and makes people happy.”

Although MacDonald never had a dog to grow up, he always wanted one. “I imagined a very energetic dog,” he says, “doing outdoor things with them, going swimming, playing fetch.”

Last December, the stars were MacDonald, an award-winning chef and owner of the East End’s first restaurant. Since it was forbidden to eat out, he was short of time. When a good friend’s chocolate lab had puppies, he fell in love with one he named hazelnut.

MacDonald says he originally expected to feed hazelnut a raw meat diet because dogs ate that before they were domesticated. But on Valentine’s Day, one day in his new life with hazelnut, he decided to create a beautiful puppy-friendly dish, Wagyu Beef with Roasted Bone Marrow Jus, and posted it on TikTok. “I was just going to make a meal,” he says.

But overnight the video hit 500,000 views: “I had no idea it was going to explode that quickly.”

Everyone (including hazelnut no doubt) wanted more, and MacDonald followed suit, creating a new dish every day, like a protein breakfast with a small serving of croquettes, ground raw meat, raw eggs, blueberries, and roasted pumpkins and sweet potatoes. He researched what foods are good for dogs and made sure he only prepared healthy meals.

And the views kept rising.

MacDonald has been recognized for his culinary achievements by both diners and the industry (he is the only Canadian chef to be recognized in the world rankings of Milan’s Top300 Best Chef Awards 2018), but he says he has never had so much positive feedback obtained like him from plates for hazelnut.

According to Food Science & Human Wellness, the fructans contained in garlic act as “prebiotics” in the intestinal microbiome and promote the production of “good” intestinal bacteria (also known as bifidobacteria).

Prebiotics can do this by passing through your digestive tract without actually being digested, which allows them to be used as nourishment for the good bacteria in your gut, helping to keep the other bacteria in your gut at bay.

In addition, prebiotics are known to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of cancer and other serious diseases, according to the Encyclopedia of Food and Health.

It’s a simple concept that requires a little organization and preparation to get started, but the benefits are well worth it.
