CBD Oil, Are the Benefits Claimed Too Good To Be True? – Cleveland Clinic

Today, many of us could certainly choose a miracle cure, especially those of us struggling with chronic pain, overwhelming anxiety, cancer-related symptoms, and / or difficult-to-treat neurological conditions. So it’s no wonder that CBD oil shows up in our search results. But can we really rely on CBD oil to affect our symptoms as positively as we’d hope it would? Internal medicine specialist Paul Terpeluk, DO explains why CBD oil may not be as effective as we’d like it to be.

The Cleveland Clinic is a not for profit academic medical center. Advertising on our website helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services. politics

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is just one of more than 100 chemical compounds found in the cannabis sativa plant. But it’s THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), not CBD, which is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that gives you a euphoric high.

CBD is made from hemp, a cannabis plant that is very low in THC so you won’t get high. CBD oil is simply a product that contains CBD extract and an oil like coconut oil, typically for topical use.

It’s important to know that since the implementation of the 2018 Farm Bill, the manufacture and sale of CBD products in the U.S. has been legalized at the federal level as long as they contain less than 0.3% THC. However, it is still illegal under some state laws.

In addition, Dr. Terpeluk that the market is oversaturated with CBD products – from bath bombs to gums, lotions, creams, tinctures, and oils – none of which are Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved and may not be 100% pure CBD. As of mid-December 2021, the FDA has only approved one cannabis-derived and three cannabis-related products, all of which are safe to obtain with a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.

“Most CBD products are not subject to supervision by a regulatory authority,” says Dr. Terpeluk. “Most of the CBD you buy is most likely contaminated with other cannabinoids, including THC, unless there is a strict marketing campaign and quality control that says it is 100% CBD oil.”

What are some of the benefits of CBD?

However, several studies show that the benefits of pure CBD can have far-reaching positive effects. To understand these benefits, it is important to consider our body’s endocannabinoid system, a complex system of enzymes, neurotransmitters, and receptors that play an important role in the development of our central nervous system. This system helps regulate a wide variety of functions, including pain, motor control, memory, appetite, inflammation, and more. By further studying the effects of CBD in these specific areas, we can better understand how CBD affects a wide variety of diseases and disorders.

Helps with neurological diseases

The FDA has approved Epidiolex for the treatment of several seizure disorders, including two rare conditions known as Duvet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Several case studies suggest that CBD can also be beneficial for patients who are resistant to anti-epileptic drugs. “In epilepsy, there is a threshold in your brain and you have a seizure,” says Dr. Terpeluk. “CBD raises that threshold.”

Other studies suggest that CBD may also be useful in treating symptoms of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s because it has neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory properties. However, more studies are needed as many suggest that not just CBD alone, but a combination of CBD and other cannabinoids can help alleviate many of these symptoms.

It can help with pain relief

By interacting with neurotransmitters in your central nervous system, CBD could potentially relieve pain related to inflammation, arthritis, and nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy). In a four-week study, people with nerve damage in the lower half of their bodies reported a significant reduction in intense, sharp pain after using a topical CBD oil.

“All of our various painkillers affect part of our pain system, be it Tylenol®, Aspirin®, morphine or opioids,” explains Dr. Terpeluk. “Nobody wants to be addicted to opioids. So if you can take a cannabinoid that is not addictive but can suppress pain, that would be the holy grail of chronic pain. “

Still, he warns, there is still much more research to be done, including whether CBD has significant long-term adverse effects when used for pain relief.

“If you take it unregulated, you don’t know how much is in and you are not exactly sure how it affects you outside of your specific pain,” says Dr. Terpeluk.

It can help with anxiety and mood disorders

Anxiety and mood disorders such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder can seriously affect your daily life and often cause both physical and emotional stress, which can lead to other underlying conditions such as insomnia, high blood pressure, chronic pain, and heart disease. It is too early to understand the full range of effects of CBD on anxiety and mood disorders, but individual studies seem to indicate different positive results. In a study of 57 men who received either oral CBD or a placebo 90 minutes before taking a simulated public speaking test, the researchers found that a 300-mg dose of CBD significantly reduced social anxiety during the test.

And while there are a variety of treatments for anxiety and mood disorders – from talk therapy and counseling to prescribed medication – Dr. Terpeluk suggests that the most important thing is to experience the underlying causes of the fear that you are about to get to the roots.

“Anxiety is better addressed by looking at what’s causing it in your life rather than figuring out what drugs can reduce it,” says Dr. Terpeluk.

It could help with cancer-related symptoms

CBD can help with nausea, vomiting, and weight loss from chemotherapy treatments. The FDA has approved three cannabis-related products to help relieve these symptoms and increase the appetite of AIDS sufferers. These drugs all contain a certain amount of THC or synthetic THC and are not just CBD alone.

However, some studies seem to suggest that CBD can help reduce the size of tumors and stop the spread of cancer cells in skin cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and more. As with other areas of study, more human clinical trials are needed to understand the full effects of CBD on various cancers.

What are the side effects or risks of CBD?

When you buy CBD oil and other products online or from a local supplier, Dr. Terpeluk doesn’t really have a way of telling the purity of the CBD you’re using as it could get mixed up with other cannabinoids, like the dangerous Delta-8 or THC.

“It’s a little bit mysterious. It’s not as harmless as you think, ”says Dr. Terpeluk. “If you’re taking CBD oil because you buy it in the market, there is a very high chance you will get a positive THC drug test because it may actually contain THC.”

CBD can also affect a wide variety of medications, including pain relievers, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and more. It can also cause several side effects, which could include:

The best advice? Before considering CBD oil or any other CBD product, it is important to speak to your doctor to decide if it is safe for you and if it does not have harmful interactions with the medications you are currently taking.

Cannabis Capsules Are Ultra-Efficient, But Are They Right For You?

This story originally appeared on Emjay

The future is here. Cannabis comes in an ultra-efficient smokeless pill form that you can take orally. It seems unconventional, but when you really think about it, most things come in pill form.

It’s not uncommon to see psychoactive compounds, medications, and dietary supplements in capsule or tablet form. It would be a lot weirder if you had to smoke your vitamins or your allergy medicine.

Before you run out and grab some cannabis pods, there are a few things you should know. The experience varies widely and the effects may not be for everyone.

What is a cannabis capsule?

Cannabis capsules take the extract of a cannabis plant and mix it with a type of carrier oil in pre-measured doses. The packaging will usually list how much THC and how much CBD is in each capsule. You swallow your pre-measured dose of cannabis just like you would swallow any other capsule or tablet.

Cannabis capsules are not an adjunct to smoking or vaping cannabis. You are an alternative. If you don’t like smoking or can’t smoke, cannabis capsules allow you to enjoy the high of your favorite strains without involving your lungs.

Hemp or CBD capsules are completely different

Labeling is crucial, and vague terms can sometimes be misleading. Hemp is cannabis and CBD is a cannabinoid. Hemp extract capsules, or CBD capsules, are also technically cannabis capsules. The main difference between the two is that hemp capsules will not get you high. Hemp contains less than 0.3% THC, which is insufficient to induce any noticeable psychoactive effects.

That doesn’t mean hemp extract or CBD are baseless. They’re a great way to naturally induce relaxation and create feelings of emotional well-being without altering your mind. If you want some of the benefits of weed but need to keep your mind sober, CBD capsules are great. This is a complementary way to enjoy cannabis. You can take CBD with weed without getting high.

How do cannabis capsules work?

You swallow your cannabis capsule and it reaches your stomach. Your body begins to digest and filter the cannabinoids, including the THC. They are released slowly over time, producing a high that can last up to two hours to start and up to eight hours to finally finish.

Capsules can be very polarizing. This is going to sound like an absolute nightmare to some people. If you want to be able to control your high and have a good idea of when it will end, capsules are definitely not for you.

If you have a high THC tolerance and use weed for its medicinal or wellness benefits, you’ll probably love the idea of a capsule. Taking one low-dose capsule twice a day will give you benefits without making you feel too high to function. It’s the perfect means to an end.

How capsules compare to other forms

Cannabis capsules work very differently than other forms of cannabis. For some people, this is a selling point. Others might see it as a disadvantage. It all depends on how you want to enjoy your weed.

vaporize cannabis

Vaping cannabis is one of the most convenient ways to use cannabis. It’s not messy. There is no smoke, no ash and no lighter. You don’t have to grind, pack or roll anything. You don’t have to remove the resin from a pipe or bong. It’s also extremely concentrated. You can take a strong hit from a vape and quickly end your smoking session when you have a novel to write or a song to play. You will feel the effects almost immediately.
