Leafreport finds over half CBD products mislabeled

Published

on

Leafreport.com recently shared results of its extensive review of CBD products they tested over the 2020-2021 period.

According to the results, 60% of the CBD products submitted for testing were more than 10% below the stated amounts.

How it works

Leafreport measures the accuracy of CBD products by comparing their reported CBG strength to the amount found in third-party laboratory tests. They base this accuracy on cannabinoid concentrations that are within 10% of the values stated on the label.

During 2021, the peer-reviewed Watchdog sent 221 CBD products from 111 brands for third-party testing. These included 35 CBD oils, 40 topical, 40 edible, 22 beverage, 55 pet and 29 coffee and tea products. In order to receive the grade A, the products had to be within 10% of the stated CBD content. Products that deviated from the label to a higher percentage were given a grade of B, C or F.

“Our mission was simple: send the products off for third-party testing and compare the results with the amount and type of CBD stated on the product label,” said Lital Shafir, Product Manager at Leafreport. “Leafreport’s goal is to promote transparency across the CBD industry and educate consumers so that they can access safe products and offer the advertised content. Reports like this show that the industry still has a long way to go to meet acceptable standards for consumers. We hope reports like this one help educate those who want to use CBD and better educate them in their purchase decisions. “

results

the reportFound that 28% of the products received the worst rating (F) because they had more than 30% CBD on the label. On average, the products’ CBD content was almost 25% below the label. Beverages had the worst results, with only 18% of the products meeting the label and two products containing no CBD at all. Of 97 products advertised with broadband or full-spectrum CBD, 44% were mislabelled. In the categories of beverages, topicals and edibles, more products received an F than an A.

“The results were pretty surprising,” says Gal Shapira, Leafreport Product Manager. “We assumed that some products would be mislabelled, but never expected that the vast majority of them would be mislabelled. It’s interesting to see how many products on the market just don’t have the amount of CBD they think they have, be it too little or too much. There was even a product that contained 221% of what they advertised. “

Shapira also told NutraIngredients-USA that while the number is not necessarily high, about 44% of pet products were the stated CBD strength. Shapira said the team expected that number to be much lower.

Categories

“We found that oils were the most accurate group of products we tested, with 74% corresponding to the stated CBD strength and an average deviation of only 13.5% from the stated CBD strength. Drinks had the worst results, with only 18% of the products meeting the label and two products containing no CBD at all, “Shapira explained.

In a previous interview, Shafir told us that it is generally easier to get an accurate dosage of oils and tinctures compared to other products, so you can see that the majority of the “A” rated products are tinctures and oils . “CBD drinks are difficult to formulate and contain relatively small amounts of CBD, which means variations of just a few milligrams can have big effects,” she said.

Foot pulling with CBD

In April 2019, the FDA formed a working group on CBD guidelines. Since then, the agency has issued some non-binding guides on CBD products. However, no rules have been set, with the Agency citing the need for more research.

“The differences are due to a lack of tests. With the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still reviewing information about the safety and potential benefits of CBD, it becomes more difficult to regulate products within the industry. In addition, regulations can vary by country, which only exacerbates the problem. Because of this inconsistency across the industry, companies are often not required to conduct full testing, and there is no authority to enforce it. Because of this, we encourage companies to run third-party testing to gain visibility into their product content, “Shapira said.

With laws like the Safe Banking Act of 2021, the Hemp and CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act of 2021, and the Hemp Access and Consumer Safety Act, Congress has the power to address key CBD issues.

In July, a bill was tabled by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, proposing a legal route for CBD supplements and instructing the FDA to set a safe upper exposure limit.

Sports & Active Nutrition Summit with a focus on CBD

In the sports nutrition field, proponents say that CBD can aid recovery, treat inflammation after exercise, and even help alleviate the effects of traumatic brain injuries. But what does science actually say about this popular ingredient? This question as well as the trends in product formulation will be expert speakers at the upcoming Sports & Active Nutrition Summit from 14.-16. February in San Diego. The speakers will also explore the pitfalls in finding safe, high quality raw material sources. Participants will gain insights into the challenges these brands face and how they can best meet their needs from the supplier’s point of view.

The Cannabis Renaissance

Published

His stigma seems to be fading fast on Indian soil. From a drug provocateur to an alternative cure for creaky joints, insomnia, anxiety and other urban health disorders, cannabis has finally arrived in a sophisticated avatar packaged in essential oils. It has become a #shelfiegoal2022 to have a healing potion powered by CBD oil to get rid of your health problems. Hemp products have clearly overcome the hump of misgivings and misunderstandings on the alternative medicine bandwagon. The cannabis economy is growing.

The medicinal properties of the plant find specific mention in ancient Vedic literature. The Atharva-Veda describes cannabis as a remedy for many diseases. The Sushruta Samhita, dated between the 3rd and 8th centuries BC. BC, advocated the use of cannabis for phlegm and diarrhea. Yet with our shared perception of ganja on the ghats, clay chillums being passed around in puffs of smoke, and hashish conquering the senses, the country has quietly continued, often with, the “psychoactive” cultivation of hemp, a cousin of marijuana religious and medical accents.

Acceptance of the versatile hemp is finally gaining well-deserved ground as cannabis-powered wellness products are sold online and become best-sellers in the industry. “When we started, we had to explain why wearing a hemp shirt doesn’t get you high. Today, people of all generations buy our products and choose to heal themselves holistically through a natural source,” says Yash Kotak, co-founder of Mumbai-based BOHECO Bombay Hemp Company.

Cannabis offers therapeutic healing and nutrition, and with over 25,000 ways to use this one plant, it’s a solution provided by the most sustainable and eco-friendly resource. “This is definitely just the beginning. We still have many miles to unlock the potential, and with the right kind of R&D practices, the world is at our feet,” says Chirag Tekchandaney, co-founder of BOHECO, adding: “In the last two years, the Income from operations increased by over 25 percent. Before that, we were operating at a three-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 93 percent. The Hemp Fiber and Hemp Seed segments are expected to register substantial CAGRs of 27 percent and 25 percent, respectively, during the forecast period.

The cumulative share of these two segments was 47.6 percent in 2019 and is expected to reach 50.1 percent by 2027. We also export our products to over 10 countries, but most of our D2C audience is from India. Our repeat purchase is highest in this category, with over 43 percent of our target audience coming back to buy more. That says a lot.” This sudden shift has been evident since the lockdowns, leading to more startups in this space. Cannabis has now gained more acceptance, reaching an overtone of “herbal” overtones compared to the source of high it was once labeled as.

There was a time when the arrival at home of a CBD oil-infused supplement freaked out our loved ones. They thought we were on drugs. Now the same people are using it for its many therapeutic purposes. There has been an overall softening of attitude. Nowadays, more players encounter Boomtown. “The growth rate of this industry is directly related to the awareness of the legality, availability and benefits of this plant,” says Richa Jaggi, co-founder of Awshad, which started last year. “I believe this softening of attitudes can be directly linked to the growing popularity of cannabis around the world. Countries like the US and Canada started the cannabis destigmatization movement and funded various research to learn more about it.

They uncovered two things: the plant has various medicinal properties, and its properties were misrepresented,” she adds. Obviously learning is spreading. Loveena Sirohi, Co-Founder and Director of India Hemp Organics based in Bengaluru says: “At IHO, our growth rate has been 200 percent year over year. We have seen a diverse age range of people incorporating hemp and cannabis products into their lifestyle. Today our oldest patient is 94 years old and consumes the Sleep Well CannaBliss oil daily for better sleep.” She adds: “With the outbreak of Covid-19, cannabis-based medicinal oils helped fight a variety of diseases, including Depression and anxiety that increased during lockdown.”

The format and application of the products advertise to a cross-section of the population through oils, balms and creams. “They’re used to treat pain, inflammation, arthritis, pimples, eczema, itchy skin, and more,” says Jaggi, adding, “Cannabis edibles like tinctures and gummies are more geared towards men and women over the age of 18 who are.” suffering from insomnia, stress, anxiety, chronic pain, bowel problems, etc. People suffering from epilepsy or undergoing chemotherapy swear by this product.” alive and well the natural way the right way. But a word of caution: Cannabis leaf falls under a Schedule E-1 drug under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules of 1945, and any medication containing a Schedule E-1 substance must be taken under medical supervision.

THE HOLY TRUTH

✥ Look for the licensed stamp of the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India on the products
✥ Cannabis-infused medicines are safe to use and non-addictive, especially when taken under medical supervision
✥ The expensive labels are due to the difficult supply chain as hemp is mainly grown in Uttarakhand in the foothills of the Himalayas
